I'm asking this question out of frustration with 2 companies I've done business with recently: Citibank and HP. I've decided I will no longer buy from American companies who use call centers located outside of the U.S.

(I've also asked the question: Which companies do NOT outsource customer service?)

It's because most people in India under the age of 40 speak English and are willing to work a call center job for far less money than what an American worker will accept. You'll be hard pressed to find a large manufacturer in ANY English speaking country that does not outsource their service center attendants.

It's a fact of the times. I do understand that Indian people that have thick accents can be difficult to understand. As you can't change the outsource trend, the best thing to do is just to call back. You aren't likely to get the same person 2x and most of them speak English quite well.

You also have to rememeber that Indian people learn to speak British English, where some words are different. Regardless if it's a country lane or a busy avenue, in British English, it's a Road. A debit card is a bank card or cheque card to them. Knowing these and other similar tidbits helps.

I hope this has been helpful :-)

Its fustrating isnt it?

Its normally the language barrier that does it. Indian call centers are normally staffed by people with degrees, yet do not understand words like "street" and "debit"

And these companies say that their outsourced call centers can give an equivalent service, yet the sales lines are always staffed with local staff.

I'm sure the quality of service will improve. I remember when call centers first started to appear. Long queues and incompetant staff... but now the this is the exception not the norm. Its only a matter of time before the service we recieve from offshore call centers improves also.

Just the ones that want to turn a profit. In a global economy, why pay higher prices for a service than you need to? Its not their fault people didn't maximize their potential and take advantage of the best university system in the world. The way the US is set up, they shouldn't have people operating phones, they should be engineers and doctors. But the government cannot force people to take advantage of the priviledges they're offered. Too bad for the kids in countries where education isn't free and good. Maybe they would have done their best.
