I don't think this is a fair statement to make during tax season.

The truth is that poverty in other countries may be less complex than it is here. Food and water are easy.

I think when people want to help, they want to help as many people as they can. In poor third world countries your money can do more. As the other person mentioned, Oprah was able to help 200 girls with the school she opened. She would have only been able to help a fraction of those here for the same amount of money. Also, a lot more people are dying there than here.

It really is sad. I wish people would help the poor people in our country more. There are a lot of them, and not all of them have big screen T.V.'s as some people have mentioned. We have a homeless problem in our country and in a country like ours children should not be living in cars and going without healthcare and food. The problem is, it's harder to help people here. Also, there are a lot of people here that are very ignorant and just don't care and think the world owes them everything. They want a welfare check without having to give anything in return. They are not thankful or interested in helping themselves or others. Obviously, not all American's are like this, but enough are that it makes you think twice.

One Christmas, a mother stood outside a grocery store asking for money. My mother went inside and bought her $100.00 in groceries. When she offered the women the groceries she said she didn't want the food, just money to buy her kids presents. Her husband had a job, but she lost hers and couldn't afford presents.

I also donate presents at Christmas, but find that decent toys just aren't in demand anymore. Kids on these lists want expensive electronics and name brand shoes. I also donate coats but am finding that most places want new coats. If you are poor, you should be happy with a gently used coat that fits. People in other countries will wear used clothing and don't require Nikes. They are happy with food and water.

I think you have been struck by Hollywood. For the most part Americans do care about the poor here. It's the Hollywood bunch that want attention by going to Zambia or the Congo and feeding kids that make the news. Do you think that Opry would get the same coverage by going to Rockhollow, W. V. to help the poor, as she did by going to Africa and sending a whole village of girls to a better school??? Don't think so. And anyone who thinks that we don't have poor kids here in the States are looking through rose collared glass's.

I think the guy who said that they don't want to admit that we have poor, may be at least partly right. However, many Americans (mostly Liberals) do care. I think the poverty that is allowed to go on, in this country is immoral, and appalling. It is not (in most cases) the result of laziness, but rather the result of greed and selfishness!!!!!

It is simple. Most Americans pretend poverty doesn't exist in our country. It is more palatable to say that it exists in other places, like Africa.

They don't, somehow conservatives on this site seem to think that we spend more on the poor than we do on defense when it is quite the opposite.

I served in the Peace Corps and Americorps and know plenty of others who did both.

Because the "poor" in America are really the illegals from other countries anyway.

Great question.

The answer is that poor is relative.

But, I do believe it's time to end all foreign aid, once and for all. We're damned when we help and we're damned when we don't.
