A friend with family just outside of NO just got back and was showing off the pics he had taken of where his mom grew up in NO (the projects) and of all the streets where there is nothing. The tourist district is running, there are wild dogs everywhere though. There are still houses where nothing has been touched since rescue workers tagged the walls. I drove though just north from Houston to Alabama at the end of last summer and you just pass rows of houses with blue tarps oin the roof because they haven't recieved the money to fix it yet. In Mississippi they were still cleaning up the downed trees along the highway. Things aren't moving quickly down there.

As a person who lives about 45 minutes from New Orleans I can tell you that yes some places still do still have alot of destruction that is currently being taken care of. As far as The French Quarter and all the tourist areas, they are open and ready for business. Mardi Gras just finished and anyone who went can tell you, The Big Easy is willing and waiting on visitors.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

New Orleans is still an unsafe and "jacked up" place. Many people there, are homeless because they lost their homes families, etc. And, yes ther are stil abandopned buildings, i really wouldn't recommend taking a road trip there right now. Jsut for your safety..Good Luck! And have fun wherever you choose to go!!

Not the whole city is ruined...there are some houses and buildings that are ruined, but are under construction or are gutted. The city is safe, just be careful where you go, and if I were you, I would have a friend or somebody by me. I live in the city, and it is fine. Do not carry too much money on you. Lakeview is under construction, but it is safe to go see. Please visit downtown and bring money to the city!!!! Tourist are always welcome!!!!!!!!
