The red is a result of sunlight being refracted through the Earth's atmosphere. The red wavelengths are the longest, have the lowest energy and refract the most, so that's what appears in Earth's shadow in the absence of any other light. You could say it's the trailing edge of all the sunrises and sunsets around the Earth at once.
Sorry you didn't hear the news. I'd blame all that mainstream media consolidation. There will be another eclipse in August but it'll be on the opposite side of the world so you'll only be able to see it in the wee hours of the morning.

The lunar eclipse is turning the moon red. You have a great view! The earth is inbetween the sun and the moon so the light has to refract around the earth's atmosphere...hence the red moon.
