I use wooden spoons in cooking because they don’t conduct heat. I wash them thoroughly and periodically sanitize them in boiling water or the microwave. You should also inspect wooden utensils to make sure they’re not cracked or damaged since damaged areas might harbor germs.

They are no more unsanitary than any other utensil. You'd be surprised how many germs there are in your kitchen.
If you're really concerned about it, put the wooden spoons (clean) in the microwave for two minutes before using them (really). The radiation will kill any bacteria. That is also a good way to sanitize sponges.

Yes, I use wooden spoons and wooden cutting boards. The trick to sanitation is hot soapy water and a little good judgement in what you prepare on them. Raw fish, poultry and meat are normally better on a plastic or composite board. Wooden spoons are ok as long as they are cleaned thoroughly after cooking.... plus the heat of the cooking process will usually stop most bacteria.

I use wooden spoons and wooden bowls and a wooden cutting board. Nobody in my family has died yet, so I guess it's ok. Can't be any worse than eating the five or so punds of dirt that we ingest every year anyway.

They can be. If you use wooden spoons they should be soaked in bleach water afterwards because the wood is porous and will absorb and hold bacteria.
