♡As already mentioned, there are NO REQUIRED vaccinations for visiting Japan. I've lived here for about 10 years and never had a vaccination.(*^o^*)
http://www.asia-planet.net/japan/vaccinations.htm
But there are a few recommended in 'special cases':
"The following medical vaccinations are desirable or helpful for travel to Japan to prevent contagious diseases in Japan:
hepatitis A - or immune globulin (IG)
hepatitis B if you might be exposed to blood (for example, health-care workers), have sexual contact with the local population, stay longer than 6 months, or be exposed through medical treatment
Japanese encephalitis only if you plan to visit rural areas for 4 weeks or more, except under special circumstances, such as a known outbreak of Japanese encephalitis
rabies - if you might be exposed to wild or domestic animals through your work or recreation
typhoid
tetanus - booster dose as needed, diphtheria - booster dose as needed, measles - booster dose as needed

Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip to Japan!♡

No vaccinations are required. However the preventive measures you need to take while traveling in East Asia depend on the areas you visit and the length of time you stay. There is a list of recommended vaccinations as well as other health info for traveling at www.cdc.gov

There aren't any requirements. However, as in any other place in Asia, I would recommend getting the Hepatitis A. Although Japan is clean and modern, you might feel tempted to eat something from a vendor on the street and you never know. The DoD school system started requiring this vaccine recently for the children. So better be safe!

RE:
Do you need any vaccinations for visiting Japan?
And if so is it a legal requirement or is it just 'advised'.

It is not necessary, however you need to take the risk..
In my travel experiences, anything can happen, just take extra precautions and always take first aid kit with you incase of nausea diarrhea, etc..
Health Clinics in your area post some of the vaccinations needed in traveling, you could inquire anytime,
Have a good trip!
