I read a fair bit, its not like I've never read a book. But I tend to go for the chic lit genre, perhaps I should widen my selection of books...........

I can tell you that you do not read enough. The best way to increase your vocabulary is to read. The books that will help you the most are the ones written by great authors: Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, and Somerset Maugham to name a few. Do yourself a favor and read.

I'm about your age and only know a few. I've heard of some of them...does that count? HA! No way are you stupid. This is actually a good idea, because now you will learn these words and have them forever. Don't feel dumb!

Yeah, I would think you should have run across a few more of those words than just one over the lifetime of your education. I knew all of them except effete...looking that up now.

Bad news: I know all those words except for "effete".

Good news: you're not stupid, and you are in the right place place to learn more of what you don't know.

Looking at that list, I know four. It's not you, it's whoever chose the words in the first place. They're trying to stretch your vocab. Don't worry about it.
