Sometimes, after I get a deep tissue massage, I feel a little bit light-headed, queasy, tired, or just plain "off" for 12 to 24 hours afterwards. I especially notice this happens if I get a massage after a long period of NOT having any massages (i.e. a month or more).

I've heard from a couple of folks that they too feel slightly "ill" or odd after a deep massage, but I don't know how common it really is. Also, I've heard we feel this way because "toxins" are released into the bloodstream, which have built up for a while in our knotted muscles. Is one of the toxins lactic acid? I saw something about that online, but it seems like only folks who engage in weight-lifting, running or certain sports build up significant levels of lactic acid in their muscles. (I don't engage in any of that).

For good measure, I try to drink extra water and non-caffeinated drinks for the rest of the day after a massage. :)

Yes it goes with the territory. Deep massage is moving toxins through the tissues and as they are released you will feel a bit ill. That's s sign it was done well and reached into some areas that needed cleansing. It's from muscles that don't get enough oxygen causing blood lactate accumulation. It's usually felt when you exercise hard (the burn) and needs to be removed which is why athletes do a warm down. It's a sign your body is working correctly. The waste product goes to your liver which is why you feel slightly sick. All normal and a good thing. Drinking plenty of water definitely helps.

You should never be bruised after a massage. That means your Massage Therapist is using too much pressure. You should try a Swedish massage or just a relaxation massage. Someone who doesn't use so much pressure. That will alleviate some of your discomfort after a massage. By continuing to receive massage you are giving your body a great deal of benefit. Always drink lots and lots of water, for the day of, and after your massage. If you could incorporate walking into your day(the day after you massage) That may help. Everyone has lactic acid whether you excise or not. Using your muscles (by walking, doing your everyday actives) will help to accumulate the build up. hope this helps! :)

Sick After Deep Tissue Massage

I've had this happen to me. Once I had to end a massage because I felt so light-headed and nauseous. I asked my friend who is a masseuse and she said it's from toxins being released from deep within the tissues. I don't know if I buy that or not but it seems somewhat reasonable. She said she had just given her mom a massage and she got sick to her stomach too. Weird.

Tons: 'What we once thought we had we didn't And what we have now will never be the same So I call upon the author to explain.' --Nick Cave's 'We Call Upon the Author' 'If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem' --Leonard Cohen's 'Sisters of Mercy' 'But I tell you, I tell you, I tell you we must send away We must try to find a new answer instead of a way' --Jim Morrison (more from Zarathustra than Birth of Tragedy) 'Some women wait for Jesus, and some women wait for Cain So I hang upon my altar, and I hoist my axe again. And I take the one who finds me, back to where it all began, When Jesus was the honeymoon and Cain was just the man.' --Leonard Cohen 'Last Years Man' I'll stop now. I think almost any Leonard Cohen could make this list. Dylan and Kobain have some good ones too.

Yes it is common. Most good MT's will warn you of this and remind you to drink plenty of water to flush toxins from system.
Toxins are many that accumulate when we don't properly
exercise. Actually it is best to exercise moderately the next day
as it helps things to keep moving and releasing from body tissue..

That's so weird. I had a massage one time and I felt the same way. I thought it was just me, so I never went back. I was all bruised and sore the next day.

Never heard such-maybe it was something you ate.
The best massages is to rub shoulders and back against
a thick edge of a brick wall. Does miracles and you know exactly
what spot to hit .
Sorry you feel this way and your friend, you may need
find a better massager.
