What better 18K or 14K for a ring, which will cost more. Why would have apple for apple.

18k is more pure gold and would cost more. But since it is more pure it is also more soft and will wear much faster. 14k Will last a lot longer without damage. 24kt is pure 14kt is 14 parts gold 10 parts alloy. 18kt is18 parts gold 6 parts alloy.
