It sounds like you answered your own question, what programs are you running? I am running Windows XP and my firewall is built into my dsl modem.

Could it be your browser is blocking or your spy ware/anti-virus I am using Mozilla/Firefox for my browser and some things it will give a yellow bar asking whether to block or allow.

I am also using Spy Sweeper/Anti-virus and it gives me an alert when it has a question whether to keep or remove something that is trying to access my computer.

A hacker has more suitable positive activities then secret agent on you. "I advise the guy has to understand me, my identity, something about my pc, or they could only randomly chosen a pc to invade?" precisely... only save your living house windows replace as a lot as date (hmm) and once you've XP ensure you've service %. 2 which comes with a loose firewall which will stay away from a hacker from randomely attempting out your pc ports for any vulnerabilty. I firewall will protect you from those issues.
