I just found out that a friend of mine was in a wreck. She said that it happened several days ago. I got mad at her because, to me, "several days" means "about three weeks." She said it happened three days ago. I asked her why she didn't say "a few days ago" instead of "several days ago," and she said that "several" meant "a few." I've always thought that the word "several" meant "a lot" or "many."
What does "several" mean to you?

I left out a bit of my story. I was mad at her for not telling me about her wreck for three weeks.
Yes, we are still friends. We are the kind of friends that we can argue about silly stuff like that, and neither friend takes it as an offense. Sheesh, some of you are so sensitive.

I agree with your interpretation. Several means many, which is much more than 3. 3 is a few.

Several means more than a few and less than many of an item. If she said "several days" that would indicate near to me maybe a week give or take a day or two. But why would several days mean about 21 days, which is almost a couple dozen doesn't make sense to me. You are right though, commonly, several means more than a few buy it is not a lot or many. A lot or many indicates an amount one can't count on the spot with a glance. One could count a few at glance but "a lot of people" can mean thousands just as "many people" can.

"Several" is more than "a few", which is more than "a couple".
A couple days = 2 or 3 days
A few days = 3 or 4 days
Several days = 4-6 days
as far as I see it, but everyone's idea is a little different.
"Several" and "a few" are pretty much interchangeable in conversation, but "several" does tend to denote a greater quantity (of whatever) than "a few". "Many" or "a lot of" days would be weeks.

Several means a few, a minimum of two days as per your friend, but definitely NOT weeks worth.
Per your understanding/concept, "about three weeks" ago would, indeed, be "several WEEKS" ago.
I think you owe her an apology for being angry with her. She didn't deserve that from you.
