Im only 18 and i am still in school right now. The reason im asking this is because ive been dealing with alot of depression and stress lately and my job is contributing to it. I go to school for a few hours and then volunteer at a hospital to get college credits for the rest of the day so it feels like i work 7 days a week. I only work weekends for my real job but it just feels like i never get a break ever. Im aslo not hurting for money right now though.

just some advice would be helpful

thanks.

I'm sorry that you are having such a difficult time right now and that your current job is contributing to that. I actually have anxiety and depression myself (along with obsessive-compulsive disorder/ocd and take medication) and do volunteer work since it is so much less stressful than a paying job if possible. You sound as though you are experiencing something like a 'burn out' -- working, going to school having to study and keep one's grades up and doing community service/volunteer work. If money is not a problem for you right now, perhaps you can just do the volunteer work while going to school.

If you feel like your anxiety and depression is really interfering with your learning and school work, you may be able to take a medical leave (of absence) from college for a semester or so and just find out from student services the proper procedure to do so. For a leave of absence, btw, you will almost guaranteed need your doctor (family dr or psychiatrist) to fill out a form provided by the college.

Dreading one's job or having a really stressful one is never fun and if it's exacerbating your anxiety and depression, I think that you should go with your gut feeling.

P.S. Another postee gave a great idea about finding out if you qualify for short-term (state) disability. I'm not sure though if the person's job has to be a full-time, 30-40 hour work-week in order to qualify for some compensation while not actually being at the job site. And a doctor would have to certify that the person has some type of medical problem that keeps them from working, at that time. Perhaps you can look in the blue pages of your local county phonebook for the phone number of short-term disability in your state.

If you have benefits, go to the doctor and get an official diagnosis, and see if he will write a letter asking that you take x amount of time off of work.

If your positions falls under FMLA guidlines, you will be able to take the time off to fiugure out what is happening in your life, and decide whether or not to return to work. And at the end of your time off your job will be there for you.

If you don't fall under FMLA guidelines and you take this note to your employer, be prepared to negotiate some stuff.

But since money is not an issue, and you volunteer, why not just leave the company. Going to school and having a volunteer job is about equal to having a paying job in school.
