Yes, you can get both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) under certain circumstances. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is doing 2 things. They are deciding if you medically qualify for benefits - The standard is the same for both SSDI and SSI. They are also deciding if you financially qualify.
The first thing they check is if you're earning under the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amount when and after you apply. SGA in 2006 was $860/mo. ($1,450 for blind) and in 2007 it's $900/mo. ($1,500 for blind). If you're earning more during the first 12 months, you are not eligible.
Then they check your work history. If you paid into the Social Security fund for enough quarters, you will be eligible for SSDI. Your SSDI monthly payment amount will be based on how much you paid.
You will be eligible for SSI if you do not have more than $2,000 in liquid assets ($3,000 for a couple) and if your SSDI is the same amount or less than SSI, or if you are not awarded SSDI because you haven't paid enough into the fund. In 2006 SSI was $603/mo. In 2007 it is $623/mo. Some states pay an additional cash amount called a SSI State Supplement. I don't know where you live so I can't be more specific.
If your SSDI is the same or less than SSI, you will receive SSDI plus an SSI check that will bring you up to the SSI level in your state plus $20/mo.
During the first 5 months of an SSDI award you will receive no SSDI but can get the full SSI amounts if you meet the liquid assets requirement.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck with your hearing. You may want to check out this Yahoo! Group to get support and information from other people who've gone through it:

when you qualify for SSD you will usually get SSI for a short peroid of time before SSD starts. You can not have both at the same time.
