very common problem with these vehicles, the sender is bad. It's part of the whole assembly. It's not going to hurt anything by not fixing it. But if you do try lifting the bed instead of dropping the tank if you have a few extra hands, saves a lot of time and prevents lines breaking as easy.

yes it's your Fuel Tank Sending Unit what needs replaced
when you buy it it will come with a Fuel pump and a filter so all you will have to do is take the old Sending unit out and put the new one in.

get ready to spend about $200
i just replace the Fuel Tank Sending unit in my 1990 Dodge Omni and it was $180 for it.

good luck
hope this helps

if the sending unit is bad, which it sounds like it is. You will have to replace the fuel pump as well, it comes in 1 whole unit. pump and sending unit.

The gauge will also read empty if the wire is broken. Check that out before you spend $100 on a new pump/sender.

i would replace the sending unit....you can replace just the unit if needed...but you have to drop the tank to do it...just keep in mind to cover your tank with a rag to keep dirt out...and to replace the fuel filter just incase...
