Some of these are "out of continuity" of the regular DC series, but I can't recommend them enough. Here goes:

1. Kingdom Come. Elseworlds Graphic Novel about what happens in the near future when new "heroes" get too aggressive, and Superman gets disenchanted with his role as a superhero. There is more to the story than this, but is the basic plot. The artwork is great, as is the story.

2. Batman: Red Rain, Bloodstorm, and Crimson Mist. Batman becomes a vampire and battles dracula in this trilogy of Elseworld Graphic Novels. The artwork is superb and the story is a lot of fun.

3. JLA: The Nail. While I have not read this, it centers around the JLA WITHOUT Superman. It details what would the JLA be like without Superman as a member. It got great reviews, and I can never find it.

4. JSA: The Golden Age. Another Elseworlds tale featuring the JSA in an alternative setting during its heyday. Another great review on this one, and I will pick it up soon.

5. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. Elseworlds tale of Batman during Victorian times.

6. Batman: Speeding Bullet. What would have happened if Clark Kent were found by the Wayne family instead of the Kents? Another Elseworlds tale-good story.

7. Batman: The Killing Joke. Within continuity of Batman's books. What happens when the Joker discovers Batgirl's true identity.
