It may sound silly but I would just like to find out for sure before I buy anything for it, I have found a few bits for a 97 and of course mine is a 96 and I'm not that clued up when it comes to bikes

Seriously the difference is about a year, nothing else. There was a change in 2000 but most parts are interchangeable. At the most there may be some colour changes.

Colour. No major changes.
Don't remember if 96 had throttle position sensor (black box like thing on right carb, maybe they all did and I'm thinking Katana?)

Not really, the only bikes that Suzuki changes much from year to year are the RM's and GSXR's.

I could b wrong but i think they fitted carb heaters so they dont run rough in cold damp conditions.

they changed just about every year mostly small changes,
if you have a haynes manual you will be able to se some of the changes made,
