The Brits ran the colonies over two hundred years ago. In the time since the US has had immigration from other parts of the world, notably Germany, Ireland, Scotland and Africa, from which the modern American accent is derived from.

Australians and Canadians don't have British accents either.

Dialects and accents can change dramatically and quickly. We have not been British for over 200 years. I live in California and went to New Mexico for a week over 20 years ago. Surprisingly, the people where we were spoke with a slight southern drawl. After only a week, I found myself speaking with a slight drawl as well. Once I returned home, the drawl left. American English has been shaped by the English, the Germans, French, Mexicans and a host of other nations. Our dialects and accents come from a mixture of language influences from others who inhabited a particular area at a particular time. Then it was passed from generation to generation. While I think the British accent is very beautiful, I am proud to have my American accent. It sets me apart to be obviously either American or Canadian. Few people in other countries would doubt where I am from.

That's a really good question. I was wondering that myself considering South Africa and Australia have similar accents.

It would be logial that Americans would have accents like that too but I am guess the American accent evolved over time. At one time, Americans did talk with a bit of an accent. Even in the 1800s it was different from what it is now, however it wasn't exactly British but not exactly American either.

I think that all the cultures and groups from different European countries coming to America in the 19th and 20th centuries helped contribute to what the American accent is now.

There isn't a single British accent any more than there is a single American one. Remember also that the American population is made up of more people of many different national origins and languages. All these different influences have merged together to create the rich variety of accents you have in America.

basically the american accent is not english, its a mix of all the nationalities that went there, notably the irish. you will be suprised how an american and an irishman have similar tones.
also remember there is no British accent, we have so many variations that that too will mix to create something in the "colonies" that is unique
accents are an interesting subject

because after centuries, language changes, adding and deleting words and accents change. Remember that the Europeans and Spaniards that came over lived with indians, Incas, Aztecs and Mayas so living with different accents and mixing of races produces more accents.

Why in one country, USA, the southern people sound different than the northern and the east and west coast have their own words? Same as I asaid from above, through time and mixing, languages and accents change.
