I can't remember the source, but the publishers told her that boys probably wouldn't read it if they saw that the author was a she. But then she doesn't officially have a middle name, so I think it was some part of her mother's name, Kathleen, which she took. So Joanne Kathleen Rowling.

"Joanne Kathleen". When she first went to get "Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone" published, he publisher told her that boys wouldn't read a book written by a woman. So they published it under her initials.
