I'm thinking of getting one, but I don't want something that a pain to tow and I also want one big enough to comfortably move 4 people around on the water. Ideas?

Probably a 14 ft. aluminum with a 25 horse engine if you're staying close to shore. If going offshore then probably a 17 foot fiberglass

I had a 23' center console I used to go 40 miles offshore fishing with, that's about the smallest I'd use for 4 people weather you're going to be fishing, or just cruising.
the weight of boat, motor and trailer was about 5000 pounds with 100 gallons of gas.
Towing that wasn't too bad, but I decided to keep it at a marina after the first year.

Definitely a 21 footer, bigger if you can get. Insure you get an 8 cylinder engine, you will need the power in the ocean. Volvo or Mercury engines are very good and as of 2003 are installed about 50/50 in all boats.

I would try looking at a boat that has 4 seats. But make sure it was not used in fresh water. You could buy one that has 2 seats and let someone sit on your lap.

16 ft. aluminum boat with at least a 15 hp engine. i suggest a grummen. If you are going to be far offshore you should consider something a little bigger.

And don't forget to check the "US Coast Guard Maximum Capacities" data plate on the vessel if it's of USA manufacture. It’s stipulates various capacities including maximum horse power.

18ft if you're not going to go offshore... 24ft if you are.
