A runner can over run fist base in attempt to beat the throw. The runner can touch the base with their foot and continue to run through into foul territory. As along as the foot tap of the runner acorss first base beats the throw and catch then the runner is considered safe and "On Base" even though technically he overan the base and is off the bag. No other bases can you do this in baseball.

.
There are eight main ways a batter can reach first base:
Getting a base hit;
Receiving a base on balls as a hitter;
Reaching base on a fielding error;
Being hit by a pitch while batting;
Reaching base on a fielder's choice;
Reaching base due to the catcher obstructing his swing while batting (Catcher's interference);
A dropped third strike with two outs and/or an unoccupied first base, with the batter reaching first base before being tagged or thrown out; and
Obstruction, when the batter-runner is blocked or hindered by a fielder who does not have the ball.

hit
walk
hit by pitch
error
catchers interference
dropped third strike
* fielders choice is a way to reach base, but without any runners on base it isn't.
* pinch runner is a way for a player to reach first base, but again without any runners on base it isn't.
