vgordon 9 says Kariya was seriously hurt, Stevens was given a misconduct and later fined by the NHL. Not true. Kariya was knocked unconscious but later came back and played in the game and even scored a goal after the hit. Stevens hit was legal. Jansen's was not. What would be a better question is what is the difference between Jansen's hit on Kaberle and Neil's hit on Drury? Absolutely nothing but Jansen gets suspended and nothing happened to Neil. Go figure.

The difference between the hits is easy. Kariya was carrying the puck and was hit cleanly. Karyia even said the hit was a good hit and he should have had his head up. The hit on Kaberle was late as it was 2.5 seconds after he let go of the puck, and janssen jumped at his head. Secondly, with everyone complaining about the hit on drury. He shot the puck and was hit half a second later.
Yes, the hit was uncalled for, but it was not dirty and was legal. As a hockey player you always make sure to have your head up, never watch your shots and passes when cutting across the middle.

The difference is Stevens hit wasn't quite as late. Kariya came back to the game. Everyone loved and respected Stevens and not Jannsen. Kariya was on the ducks and not the gay maple leafs. And that was the old NHL and this is the new NHL....much different with the checking and everything

Kariya's hit was done as a legal check, but unfortunately he was seriously hurt. Steves was penalized as well as given a misconduct for the game and later fined by the NHL.
Kaberle's hit was illegal and was after he had possesion of the puck. There was no penalty called. I hope Kaberle is alright.

stevens hit on kariya was a legal hit(not late or dirty)even though he got knocked out he went to the locker one came back out and scored on his next shift(they were playing for the cup that year)jannsen's hit on kaberle was 10 seconds after he released the puck and he didn't return to the ice after wards,as a matter of fact they carried him off on a stretcher.i think after all of the stink that was raised over the drury hit the commissioner had no choice but to finally do something about illegal hits, and this includes late hits.

jansens hit was more of a dirty hit. it was rroughin interference, elbowin and way to late. stevens was a clean brutal hit, i think the reason ur comparin them is becuz they were both down for a while, but stevens was clean ( u know what was sick , kariya got up and scored a goal after )

Better comparison is Neil's blindside charge on Drury. That hit set a precedent that Jansen thought he could get away with his hit on Kaberle.
