Kinda late of a question, huh?
Well anyway, today I felt like playing Tomb Raider II (PS1) on my PS2. I couldn't, a message came up saying something like "cd corrupt" or "reading error" (BAH! CAN'T REMEMBER!).

Could it be that the PS2 wan't really backwards compatible, or is it because my Tomb Raider disk is too SCRATCHED up?

This is the only PS1 game I own (since I sold/threw away the others) so I can't check if it's only this disk. HELP!

Probably a Disc Read Error. Listen close when you try to start it. You will likely hear the CD skipping. That means that the CD is too scratched.

Carmen, it is a delight for me to find a question I can give some relevancy as I am not a game machine owner, but backward compatiblity has always remained the stumbling block, since the early days when IBM-PC 80286's and the XT that came prior were being promoted for sale.. The Sony PlayStation 1 or PS1 was a early toy and the PS2 was the next generation of the PlayStation by Sony... a well scratched surface of a game disc (CD) can be your reason for not being able to play TombRaider but also backward incompatibility could be a possible reason. If the disc is corrupted, it could be that your error message and the halting of game loading process is due to a worn and scratched shiny disc surface. It is the shiny clear silvery surface that is used by the cd reader to let you load and play the game The surface with the label on it does not hold data... That is all I have to offer about your question... Whether to buy a next gen machine or to do some upgrading on an older model is a question many computing hobbyists and business computer department people are forever stuck asking themselves
And game machines are no different in this matter about the new machines and the older ones a c64 or commodore-64 was my first personal computer bought in 1984 and it was fun

To make a long story short, NO.

The PS2 is NOT completely backwards compatible. Of my library of over 100+ PS1 games, I have several PS1 games that have never worked on my PS2, such as Midway Arcade Classics and Dino Crisis.
Sony lied when they said the PS2 is 100% backwards compatible, plain and simple. I own a slim PSTwo and PS2 SCPH 30000 model, and I know what I am talking about, in case any fanboys want to step up and challenge me on my claims.

well my ps2 is backwards compatiable i have 15 ps1 games that play just fine but your probably right its just the disk and it said read disc error try buying or borrowing another disc or ps1 game this problem may also be the laser eye not reading ps1 games. Ps2 has problems like this they sometimes dont read ps2 games but read ps1 or the other way around i have hear of ps2 doing this and some play dvds but wont play games.

The ps2 is completely backwards compatible with ps1and 2 games.

I would clean the laser with a DVD cleaner

Most likely if the disk is scratched up that is the problem right there .

No, the PS4 heavily isn't backwards nicely matched. this implies you will no longer have the skill to stick your Kingdom Hearts a million.5 Remix disc into the PS4 and play it. in spite of the undeniable fact that... The PS4 can help GaiKai. this could be a "activity streaming provider" such as OnLive for the computing device. in this setup, the activity performs on the distant computing device, and the ensuing video and audio streams on your activity console. style of like Netflix...yet with a video activity, no longer a action picture. GaiKai has plans to make PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles attainable on its provider, in spite of the undeniable fact that there are not the different information popular as we communicate. case in point, will GaiKai fee funds? Will it require you to "purchase" person video games (such as you do with PSN) or will or no longer it incredibly is a subscription (like Netflix)? Does GaiKai plan to hold all PS1/2/3 video games or basically particular ones? maximum severely, what style of internet connection will GaiKai require with the intention to have comfortable, responsive activity play? With the PS4 introduced, it incredibly is basically approximately particular the PS3 turns into extra fee-effective. whilst the KH activity comes out, and the PS3 is extra fee-effective, that could be the time to purchase. this style you're assured which you have got the skill to play the activity. and that i'm incredibly beneficial you will detect some different PS3 video games that are actually not attainable on the 360 besides.

It should just be the disc unless you have a mod chip in your PS2, those cause problems with some games.
