Its very possible, but the difficulty is that you wont be able to ask yourself the questions (or to suggest ideas) that you would otherwise be unable to answer.
For example, if you have a block against the affect your parents are having on you, your ability to penetrate the situation and psychological feelings you are experiencing will be limited by your own perceptions. Because an outside psychiatrist will be able to see those connections more clearly (because they don't have the emotional connection to them) they will be better able to mediate the distance between you and your perceptions.
I am pretty good at diagnosing myself, but even I talk regularly with my therapist to work out ideas and bounce back patterns and actions that I have done, since I do not know what I might not be seeing or missing. And despite how constant and rigourous I think I am, there is always another corner or shadow that I just did not see.
Besides, a psychiatrist (psychotherapist) doesn't just sit back and make judgements and thats it, although some do. Most try to engage the patient (which is why they use stupid phrases like 'how does that make you feel?') and work towards the patient 'realising' within themselves what the problem/situation is. So even in therapy, you sorta end up being your own psychiatrist/therapist anyway.

I seriously doubt this would be legal. A psychiatrist prescribes medications. A Psychologist is a therapist. Many people do self-medicate with illegal drugs or alcohol. You can try to psychoanalyze yourself too.

well you'd have to be able to lie on the couch talk you own ear off while at the same time appeariing intensly interested and writing everything down. We all have the capability to sort out our issues if we want to, there is nothing like taking a long walk by yourself, no portable sound systems allowed, to do that

Oh absolutely. Nobody is going to know you better than you, nor will anyone be able to fix you better than you.
Medical professionals (doctors, therapists, etc) aren't the boss -- they're people you're enlisting to help you with helping you.
