The top glass part of the backboard, not the supports, and it comes back into the field of play.

The very top of the backboard (glass) is in bounds. The out-of-
bounds lines painted on the floor are four inches beyond the
backboard, so a basketball that hits the top and returns into the
playfield is a fair ball (still in play).

Ok, most of you guys don't even know what you are talking about. I've been playing basketball since 1st grade, and still am. When the ball bounces on top of the backboard, no matter where it lands, it is out of bounds. Even though it has not touched the "out of bounds" area. The same goes for when you hit the back of the backboard.

in every league but the NBA the top of the back board is out of bounds. International, college, high school, church, etc. only the NBA has the rule that if the ball bounces back in without hitting anything else like a wire is it still in play. All other leagues should consider the top of the backboard out of bounds.

man this is a tough one. I think it maybe different for high school, college, and the NBA.

I know it's considered out of bounds in one of those leagues.

But the only thing I know FOR SURE I remember seeing a highlight reel one time in the 80s and Isiah Thomas had a shot. He took it from the baseline and the ball hit the top of the backboard it bounced like 3 times on the top of the backboard and fell in. The basket counted.

I couldn't tell you whether it's out of bounds or in bounds, but I can tell you for absolute certainity I saw that play on a highlight reel.

If it just hits the backboard and comes into play, it's a live ball. If it hits any of the supports. it's out of bounds.

Yes because it didnt go out of bounds...it didnt roll out pass the lines. but if it fell on top and then fell off out of bounds...then it is out of bounds.

It's still in bounds as long as it doesn't hit the shot clock.
