My mother in law would like to use something comparable to Irish moss that can handle the full sun of Texas, can spread easily across border stones, can handle light traffic, and is pet-friendly. Has anyone had any success with these types of conditions?

I'm in inland Australia and I love that irish moss, Sagina subulata look also. I found an Australian plant that looked like it but it died very quickly (and it was supposed to be tough).

There is a plant that grows wild in my lawn, that is also sold here as a grass substitute and for between paving stones called Dichondra repens (or D. micrantha). It puts up with full sun in between concrete paving and doesn't need a lot of water. Lovely kidney shaped, green leaves and can be walked on. We can buy it here as you would grass seed. Each plant spreads out quite far, and it is low growing (It gets as hot as 40 degrees C hear and frosts to -5 deg. C.

You seem to be able to get many of our plants there easily, so it may be worth a look for.

There is a new, miniature mint that grows very compact plants that look great between stones. It also releases a great aroma when stepped on.
