I went to a Jr high school that only had one black girl in the whole school. She lived some where north of our house, down a big hill in the ghetto. I have no idea why she was coming all the way to our school but she and I started walking together. The first time my mother saw her, she called me back to the house and told the girl to go on as I was going to be late. She told me that I was not allowed to walk with her any more as she was not "our kind". I had a real problem understanding what she meant as she was very light skinned and I am kind of dark skinned and brown eyes and hair. I didn't think she looked all that different from me. Mom told me that she was a ****** and we don't run with them and not to walk with her ever again. The next day, I started out as early as I could and was at least two blocks ahead of her when she got to the top of the hill where she could see me. She called out to me to wait on her and instead, I started running. I don't think she tried to catch me but I did see her in the hall way at school and the hurt in her eyes was something I have never forgotten. I was so ashamed of myself even then and it has never gotten any better. This was in 1957 and the world was very different. My mother was a very sweet and kind person but those were the rules we lived by. I have never done anything like that again and have probably bent over backwards to not be prejudiced but it was a stupid and wrong thing for me to have done and I knew it. Minding my mother was not right in that case and it felt really bad. I wish I knew where that girl is today so I could tell her how sorry I am but I know that will never happen so all I can do is tell the world that it's not right to teach your children something so evil.
