It is perhaps never alright but sometimes people deserve to have meanness tossed their way.
If they try to make you mad.
say something mean to you.
talk behind your back in a negative way.
over step the boundaries of friendship.

It is alright to be mean to someone only if have a good reason to be. A lot of people are mean because they are mad at something or someone but that's wrong because you can't take out your anger on other people that didn't even do anything. So the only time you can be mean is when you have a very good reason to be and only to the people that did something to you and you want revenge.

Mean = intentionally cruel desiring to cause emotional pain?
Well, in general, it isn't okay. but there are people who have basically very little conscience. These people will walk all over you if you're civil and play only by the rules. In these circumstances, the person should be confronted with planned conviction and consequence.
Say some twinky stealing SOB takes your twinky. You don't want it back 'cause its got his gastric juices all over it. So you talk to ten friends and form a pact. Then you tell the twinky stealing SOB that if he ever steals one of your twinkies or one of your friends twinkies, that all ten of you are going to pin him on the ground and stuff twinkies down his throat till he pukes.
He'll challenge you, 'cause he has no conscience - he's a twinky stealing SOB. So, you carry the plan through and stuff him till he pukes.
Sounds mean, but its better for him to get a face full of twinkies then it is to let him go through life getting away with his behavior. It really isn't mean, it's what's called for.
When older, you gotta find similar ways, but ones that won't send you to Yale to get an education.

Only when dealing with a totally clueless, pushy @sshole. I try to resolve things as nicely as possible, but if someone gets my goat, LOOK OUT! The claws are coming out!

I honestly try to never be mean. I believe you get alot farther being nice. But, when someone is so rude and nasty, and it's totally uncalled for, I give it back ten fold.

When you are being pushed to your limits and you just can't take it anymore. It can turn you mean even though you don't want to be.

You can seem meaner than meanness by calmly being blunt and honest. Mean isn't necessary.

i say when they are mean to you go ahead and be mean to them. I'm tired of being nice to people who never change and be nice to me.
