Yes! One of my cats is amazing that way. Once when I was sad, he stayed indoors all night (which he never does) and sat still right next to me, watching me, all night.

I don’t know about all pets. All I can talk about and know is about dogs.
Yes, I noticed that depending on how I feel, my dog will respond a particular way. when I am sad, my dog always tries to go up on my lap or sit right next to me. but if i am happy, he will get in to play mode and bring a ball or something I can throw. According to animal behaviorists and scientists, dogs can detect the specific visual, acoustic, and possibly olfactory stimuli accompanying each of our emotions. They do not literally know sadness or happiness but they are able to interpret the various signals we give off.
It is well known that some dogs will become aggressive towards fearful individuals only. In humans, fear has an identical olfactory stimulus as does aggression. Dogs detect the new odor and become alarmed of the individual’s presence and possible danger. Just like fear/aggression, each of our emotions come with its distinct set of stimuli that dogs and other animal species can distinguish.

yes - my cat (henery) can always tell when someone is upset. he's usually very standoffish, but if you're sad he'll come and sit in your lap and let you pet him. otherwise, he'd be scratching your eyes out...
my great dane (thunder) is very calm when people are upset, whereas he is usually a pretty hyper guy. he'll lay down next to you (on you if you're taking up too much room on the couch) and put his big head in your lap, and just look at you with those big brown eyes - makes you feel better just looking at him.
smokey (the other cat) and sabrina (the other dane) could really care less... they are both happy-go-lucky animals who have no idea what's going on half the time! they both like to love and cuddle with people, but do it all the time as opposed to being more comforting when you are upset.

Yes, My dog always know when I'm sad and he always know the right thing to "say" when I'm down to cheer me up and comfort me
(UN-like my Husband he is clueless at times)
he also alerted us before my husband passed out he was going crazy and barking at my husband and we didn't know why until my husband passed out 10 seconds later.
And even now when my husband is feeling bad he sits under him until he gets well.
LOL

yes, actually I had a dog once, my most beloved dog of all... I was in high school. When I came home depressed, he used to put his paw on me... and once, when I was so sad that I fell on the floor, he put his paw on my shoulder. Also, when I was happy, he was more energetic than ever. Gosh, I miss my Charm, that was his name... he had pretty eyes and he died after a few years...
