Yes, it is!
Just like tennis, chess is regarded as a competitive and recreational sport. It has its own Federation (FIDE) that defines the rules of the game, organizes the Chess Olympiads every 2 years and other championships and also rates the players according to their performance (it's called the ELO rating).
Have you noticed how fit the best chess players in the world are? You need to do a lot of physical as well as mental training before you start playing games like chess!

Well if you call a sport a competition between two people then YEAH. It isn't a sport to most people though. Although I guess if ESPN is going to call Poker a sport(mind you I was fine when it was simply the Main Event of the World Series of Poker but now it is almost all the events just so they have WSOP in the name) I guess Chess can be called on. It is a thinking man's game. It is a GAME, but that doesn't mean it is a sport.

Ok...This is how I define a sport: If you can put "Let's go play _____!" Then I consider it a sport. So in your case it would be...Let's go play chess!....So technically in my words yes it is a sport! Hope this helps!
