Find your Windows XP or System Restore CD. Insert it in the CD drive while your computer is on. Then restart it. It should take you through the options of restoring your system. Unfortunately there is a huge risk that you have lost your data and will be installing from scratch.

Try this first...
Unplug your computer, and take out the battery. Then hold the start button (the one that turns on your computer) for about a minute. This completely releases all of the power to your computer.
Then put the battery back in, and plug it in to the outlet.
Do a normal startup. Sometimes this clears up this kind of problem.
If this does not work, restart your computer and hit F2 repeatedly until you get the boot system. I cannot tell you how to do this without looking at it myself, but sometimes, the boot drive does not start the OS, which gives you the blank screen. Ask someone to help you with this part.
If that does not work, get the Operating Software for your computer, if you do not have one, then call the manufacturer to see if you can get one from them. Try reinstalling the software. You will most likely lose all of your saved work, but you will have a regular working computer again.

Take your HD out - carefully. Put it in an external 2.5" case. Plug it (USB) into one of your other computers, (or a friends). See if the data is available to back up if so back it up.
Now try a 3.5" floppy start up disk from dos, win 95, win 98 or win ME in your laptop. see if it boots into dos. this will tell you if the screen is broken. You may have to get into CMOS and change your boot order. If it boots and you get a C:> on your screen turn it off reinstall the hard drive, try your restore disks or install from an operating system disk.

That also happened to me, what you can do is go to Best buy, circut city or where you bought your laptop, you can also go to the geek squad. Tell them your problem and within probably 2-4 weeks your laptop will be back to normal. The worst that it can be is that they have to totally rebuild the mother board (thats what happened to me) well that was from a virus.
You may also have a virus that causes that sort of problem.

It's a problem with the OS and you have to repair it by entering the bootup disk if it's XP. Not sure about Vista but I would think it's the same. If you don't have the disk borrow one or you have to go to the computer store (sorry).

Sounds like you're having a problem with the OS. Run the system restore disk, this should clear up the problem.
