My name is Brooks and I was wondering if there will ever be a hurricane named Hurricane Brooks. I know my name is rare so it would be cool if there was actually a hurricane named that. If you know how hurricanes are named or know how to suggest names, please tell me.

Good question Brooks. Here is the answer. Since 1978 hurricanes in the eastern Pacific were alternately given female and male names, but not just English. Spanish and French were used too. In 1979 this practice was adopted in the North Atlantic. A storm only gets named when it reaches tropical storm strength. The names are selected by the National Weather Service. If you would like your name to be considered I would suggest you write a letter of request to the Director of the National Weather Service in Washington, D.C. at the following address:

Silver Spring, MD 20910

I just wanted to say that beachgirl is incorrect.

There are two lists of names, one for Pacific Ocean storms and one for Atlantic Ocean storms. Both lists begin with a name that starts with the letter A. On one ocean, the A name is a boy's name, and the B name is a girl's. On the other ocean, the A is a girl's name and the B is a boy's. The sex of the names swaps yearly, so one year the Pacific gets a girl's A name and the next year a boy's A name.

Also, if a storm becomes a hurricane and touches land, the name is retired. There will never be another Mitch (1998, Honduras and Nicaragua), Camille (1969, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Virginia), or Katrina (2005, Louisiana and Mississippi).

The computers at the National Weather Service develop a list of names prior to the beginning of hurricane season. The gender of the names switches annually. Submit you name to them.

The other guy gave a good answer, but also, they go down the
list in alphabetical order. So if they already had a "B" name
this season, the next one would be starting with a C, etc. until
they went all the way through the alphabet, then it starts again
with an "A" name.
