I want to obtain a business license in the state of Nevada. My question is; can I use my legal name as the business name? For example, if my name was "Jane Doe", could I have a business license issued to the business of "Jane Doe" or would I have to word the business differently, like "Jane Doe's Pizza Kitchen"??

I jumped out of my chair with joy when I read the first 3 answers! You guys don't know how happy I am right now!! :D Thank you so much!

So just to clarify, If I obtain a business license as "Jane Doe" on my business cards I would put "Jane Doe D.B.A. Jane Doe's Pizza Kitchen".

NOW- could I have that same business license as "Jane Doe" and have multiple businesses? Like "Jane Doe's Pizza Kitchen, Jane Doe's Pooper-Scooper and Jane Doe's Pool Service? (Ha, these are not the business I want to do, just examples of multiple business that "Jane Doe" would be D.B.A.)

You can use your name and you can use both your name and a made-up name. You can use a name that is already used on your business license as you will be using your own number.

Registering a business name/trademark is another application separate from your business license (Reservation of Name) in which you cannot use a name that is already taken.

* You can use either name on your business card. You should probably put in the main section the name that you will have a bank account with and people will write checks to.
*You can have more than one D.B.A.

You can use just your name, unless it's already registered. Most people use their name and a business name. A business license as such would normally read "Jane Doe: D.B.A. Jane Doe's Pizza Kitchen". "D.B.A." is the standardly used abreviation for "doing business as". This puts the business as your name AND as a standard recognizable trade format.

Good Luck :-)

As a general rule, you can use just your name....UNLESS there's another business already licensed in that name. Then you can't use it, even if it is your legal name.
Good luck!
