Assistant/Alternate Captain.

The "A" means assistant captain. Generally, there are two "A"s on a team along with a "C", which is captain. Some teams don't have a "C" and have three "A"s instead. For example, Pittsburgh doesn't have a captain this year because they couldn't find anyone worthy enough to replace the Magnificent Mario. All three players can talk to the ref on the ice.

The A stands for Assistant Captain. They are allowed to talk to the referee over a disputed call if the captain is not available, and can be the coach's representative in such cases.
