The spirit only shows himself to my friend's little boy and seems to want to play with him. I am interested to find out when he passed away and how old he was.

I work with the Penn State Paranormal Research Society and over the past few years we've dealt with cases involving children seeing spirits.
During these cases, we've brought in counselors, psychologists and even some medically trained professionals. The first thing to rule out is imagination. There's nothing wrong with a child claiming to play with an imaginary friend (well, unless he's over ten, then perhaps some would consider that concerning). A child psychologist would know more about this, as I am neither a psychologist nor a child developmental health expert. To a certain degree, imaginary playmates are considered healthy.
You can have the parents ask their child specific questions about the playmate. Does the friend have a name? How old is he? What does he look like? Ask these questions repeatedly and see if the answers are the same.
It sounds like you're ready to jump to a paranormal conclusion, and even though some might think it's fascinating to think that a child is connecting with the dead (ala "The Sixth Sense"), we must first understand that children are imaginative.
Does anything else odd or unusual happen around the boy? To the parents? Is the child afraid to interact with the "spirit?"
There shouldn't be any concern about this unless the child is frightened or spends all day wanting to play with this "spirit" over actual, human companions. If so, I would suggest talking with a child psychologist.

Honestly, you might not be able to. I want to say though that just because he is a spirit it does not mean that he was ever alive. Some sprirts never had a life on earth which means that they are not dead and can not be sent to "the light." If your friends boy is not scared of him then ask him to talk with the other boy and try to find things out, if he is then you or your friend need to ask him to leave, don't ask him to stop showing himself because the other boy will still feel him there. Young children are very sensitive to things like this and they need to be delt with carefully. If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me.

If you just really need to know all of this, have your friend's little boy ask the spirit. But more importantly this spirit should be sent to the light and should not continue to remain earthbound. That isn't healthy to anyone involved for this spirit to be "hangin' out" at the house. If your friend decided they want to get this spirit to leave, contact me and I can tell you how to do it.

You could talk 2 your friends little boy and ask him to tell you when hes there or you can ask him 2 ask when he died and all of that you want 2 know.

You can contact a medium close to your home and ask them to help you. Most children attract spirits of young children all the time and they can cause problems with their sleep pattens to.

My son had an immaginary friend once but it was a pig that he blamed for the smell of him farting.
