Dinosaurs existed millions of years ago, not billions. They had died out by the time man's earliest ancestors began to show up.Your assumption that dragons might be dinosaurs is valid, because dinosaur bones have been discovered all over the planet.Dragons and legends about them are a worldwide phenomenon.I think ancient peoples discovered the bones of these creatures and could not help but wonder and be intrigued by them. The completed skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex in a museum is a pretty awe-inspiring sight.

At somepiont there most likely a dinosaur which bared much similarity to dragons. Maybe even a few of these survived through the ice age by gaining the ability to blow fire through natural selection, but were eventually slain explaining how there would be such vivid pictures of dragond from the beginning of time.

it is odd that every society in the world has dragons, The Chinese the Europeans even the Mayans . I really liked that movie Reign of Fire the dragons would come back to life every few thousand years and burn everything and eat the ash, once they destroyed everything they would go back to sleep until the earth grew back all its plants and animals
