Your question is a little odd. "consequences of punishment" is what happens after the criminal is punished.

So, the potential benefit to both society and the criminal is that they choose to stop being a criminal and find others ways of making a living.

The benefit fo society if this choice is made is that there is one less criminal to worry about.

The benefit to the criminal for choosing this route is that there is less risk of going back to prison.

Too often, though, criminals choose to continue in their criminal activities. I think because they don't view our system of punishment as something to be avoided.

It provides benefits for the criminals if they get sent to jail, and they were in need of shelter and food.

It provides benefits for society if it reduces potential future crimes due to fear of punishment.
