It is not so much the brand as the type, and what you need it for.
If you don't need color, get a laser as they are considerably more cost efficient than inkjet printers. (I have both, only because color lasers are still fairly expensive, and I need to print in color occasionally.)
Compare the cost per printed page of the INK refills, as this is the most expensive item in dealing with inkjet printers. REMEMBER that the ink WILL dry out once it is in the printer, especially if you don't use it often!
I have owned almost ALL brands at one time or another, and find little actual difference between them.
The main advantage of some Cannon color units is that you can change EACH color individually when they run out, instead of buying a single multicolor cartridge.

I have a lexmark which does all manner of amazing stuff and is very good. But the man in the ink shop said the other day I should buy an Epson cos the ink is cheaper. However I reckon I can go down the road and get them refilled. I had a lexmark at work as well and apart from the paper support breaking (we stuck in together with blutack) it was brilliant - quick, easy to change ink, good quality and so on

Epson by a mile.
I had a top of the range Lexmark it was good and did everything very well.
Then the inks ran out and it would cost £36 to replace them or £20 to refill them.
I now have the Latest Epson with new Durabrite ink, to replace all the ink brand new is £15.
The quality of print in all types is perfect and photo's all the way upto A4 is brilliant.
I will never go back to Lexmark now i have an Epson.

Epson !
Lexmark are cheap but they get you on extortionate ink prices.
Epson, compatible cartridges are pennies, and the plus with Epson is, if printer goes wrong within the 12 month warranty period, they`ll deliver you a replacement next day !

Epson without doubt, the Lexmark may be cheaper but the replacement ink cartridges are a great deal dearer. I have used the R300 for a couple of years and like the fact I can print on my CDs.

EPSON....With Continuous Ink System, my savings are about 90% on the cost of cartridges. Epson cart, £6.00, continuous ink same amount of ink, forty pence. I did a search on the web for " Continuous Ink Supply System" , discovered which printers can use system, took my pick of the printers &got a CISS. Specifically, some epsons (like 320) will print onto CD directly.
So, the answer to your question...whatevr you get make sure it can use CISS

between those two brands, i would get the epson. both brands have their pros and cons, but lexmark definitely has more cons than pros.
lexmark cartridges break down fast, require a lot of upkeep, and generally just don't work well. also, you run into the issue where if one colour runs out, the whole cartridge must be replaced.
epson cartridges have chips, but print superbly. and most have separate cartridges for each colour, allowing more usage with less replacement.

i guidance the Epson. the completed fee of possession is an similar with the HP: ink cartridges fee a similar, initial purchase fee is an similar. you'll word the large difference on your portraits printing. even as it is composed of portraits/images, HPs do merely not stack up antagonistic to the Epsons. Epson is used via portraits experts for that very reason. also, Epson makes use of dye-depending ink quite of water depending ink like HPs. gently moist your finger and run it for the period of an inkject print via HP and this is going to smear horribly. no longer so with Epsons. The Epson also will print onto an inkject printable disc, too. The HP doesn't. i have used both sorts of printers earlier...and continually come decrease back to Epsons.
