Softball is a team sport in which a ball, eleven to twelve inches (or rarely, 16 inches) (28 to 30.5 centimeters) in circumference, is thrown (pitched) underhand by a player called a pitcher and hit by an offensive player called a batter with a round, smooth stick called a bat (usually wooden, metal or composite). Scoring is accomplished by the batter running and touching a series of three raised markers on the ground called bases, and then touching the final base, called home plate.

In softball there is an offensive team, the team that occupies the field, and a defensive team, the team that bats. Both teams switch between offense and defense. The determining of which team is offense and which is defense is based on a series of outs. The goal for the defensive team is to recieve these outs. Outs can be recieved in many ways. One way to get an out is by, a defensive player catching a ball, which was hit by an offensive player, in the air. Another way is by a defensive player throwing the ball to another defensive player, that is standing on a base, before the offensive player reaches that base. A third is by the pitcher striking out the batter.

A strike out is when the pitcher throws three strikes to the batter. A strike is given when there is a good pitch, which the batter does not hit, or when the batter swings at the ball and misses it. The batter is also given four balls. A ball is a bad pitch. If the batter recieves for balls she gets to go to the first base, this is called a walk.

Softball has nine innings, an inning is one series of both teams playing offense and defense. At the end of the nine innings the team with the highest score wins.

It's pretty hard to tell you how to play the game through typing, but here's some tips:

1. Learn the right mechanics and fundamentals. These are key!! You need to talk to someone [your coach] or someone who knows how to play about the correct mechanics and fundamentals.

When Batting:
1. Legs about shoulder width apart.
2. Back elbow raised.
3. Hands loose, and middle knuckles alligned.
4. Plant your back foot when you swing, and take a small step with your front.
5. Slightly bend your knees.
6. Finish with your belly button facing the pitcher.

When Playing Field:
1. Be in the 'Ready Position': knees bent, glove ready to stop a grounder.
2. Know where the ball goes! If you get the ball, you have to know where to throw it.
3. Get in front of grounders, NOT to the side.
4. Just don't be afraid of the ball. This will help you with everything.

I HOPE THAT HELPED YOU!
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A GREAT SEASON!

Same as baseball just using a bigger ball and the pitcher pitches underhand. there are 3 outs in every inning and there are 9 innings. every person that gets across the plate scores 1 point at the end of 9 innings team with most points wins.

I would def. go to the batting cages once a week until the season starts, and you might want to play catch with someone. Have them throw you some ground balls and pop-ups. You'll have more fun if you hava a little confidence in your game and you won't look like a retard.
Good Luck
