Personally, I think it's rude when people around talk in their own language when you are there with them.
I have co workers that are Hispanic, and they are always talking and speaking Spanish. They were not supposed to even do that in the first place because of the policy, but they still do it anyway.
It's just rude because you don't know what they're talking about and you wonder if they're talking about you.

How is it rude? I feel like if they are not talking to you or about you then I don't see the problem. I speak Spanish and work at Walmart, its certainly not against their policy for us to speak any other language because of their openess about diversity. You should not be so self concious or stuck on yourself to think that someone is always wasting their breath talking about you. I speak Spanish to other co-workers because its more comfortable and you feel more tied together, especially if you are a native speaker. I also try to practice because I don't live in the Dominican Republic anymore and my husband doesn't speak Spanish. Also, I know enough English and I'm not scared to tell someone what I think about them to their face. So...

One if it is against policy for them to do this, put an EOE Complaint against them. They should know better, but if you let it go and do nothing about this, you are in the wrong also. Ask your supervisor to have a meeting and reinforce this policy. There is nothing wrong with any person speaking his own language at the appropriate place. If you and a friend know a different language you can have a conversation in it. They will more and likely complain about this.. Most people speak in their own lahguage to one another because they can understand one another better. It is a natural habit, but they should explain to you what is being said also out common cuoristy,

I don't listen to other people's conversations(well, sometimes I do). I speak Spanish fairly well, but I did have a couple Russian coworkers once that were always carrying on in their native language. I didn't care. I'm there to work, not talk. It is rude by Emily Post standards, but it's not worth pointing out.

Instead of them being rude, perhaps you are being paranoid. I think it's absurd to expect anyone to always use the same language you do just so you feel "more comfortable." Haven't you got more important things to worry about?
FYI, I don't like illegal immigration either (if that's what you're getting at), but if someone is doing his or her job it shouldn't matter how they talk on their own time.

I don't think its rude, I mean if you are talking to them and then they mutter an insult in there language yes thats rude, but if they just want to chat in there own language to someone who speaks it, thats fine. Just say "excuse me, what did you say?" But if its just like they are having a conversation and its non of your business than just ignore it.

It is pretty rude. Why don't you tell them that it is rude. Then you can see what type of people you are working with and act accordingly. The truth will set you free.
