My contibution, start by saying no one happens with regard to a soul or spirit, but the heart stops beating and then (on to the decomposition part).

Maybe that's could be your topic, the diffrent (non religieous) beliefs about what happens when you die rather than the physical decomposition.

Public speaking is about keeping the listeners interested and i'm sure making it too heavy will have a few of them switching off.
The medical terms and what actually happends can be found easily on a google search but i'm not sure that would be the best way to go.
There are also many diffrent types of death where the heart stops first, or maybe the brain first due to an impact then the body the body carries on for a second or two, not such a good subject to listen to is it?

As another option, why not use the actual words from people who have died and brought back to describe what it felt like, what they remember about being dead.

My grandafter died 8 times before he finally went and said it was just like being asleep, nothing more.

DECOMPOSITION:

Once an organism dies its body is recycled in some way or other. The body of a living organism begins to decompose shortly after death.

Animals that feed on dead life forms are known as scavengers. Scavengers include such creatures as raccoons, vultures, blowflies and carrion beetles. Given the chance, predators such as lions will also feed on carrion.

Organic material may then further decompose by detritivores, organisms which recycle detritus, returning it to the environment for reuse in the food chain. Examples of detrivores include earthworms, woodlice and dung beetles.

THAT FILM:

I liked that 1990 film called 'Flatliners' which refers to its characters' experiments with states of temporary near-clinical death.

I always find it fascinating when people who have been dead for a few minutes get resurrected to tell their experiences.

BELIEF OF CULTURES:

Many cultures, past and present, have had some belief in an afterlife. Such beliefs are usually manifested in a religion, as they pertain to phenomena beyond the ordinary experience of the natural world.

Through the ages, various evidence has been advanced in attempts to demonstrate the reality of an afterlife, but nothing has ever been proven about either the existence or nature of an afterlife so the topic remains highly speculative.
Creationists and the religious generally believe that there is such a thing as life after death.

Atheists generally believe that there is not.

Agnostics generally hold the position that like the existence of God, the existence of supernatural phenomena, such as souls or life after death, is unverifiable and therefore unknowable.

Witches, often called neopagans or Wiccans, generally believe that, on death, one's soul/spirit/essence enters the Womb of the Great Mother, which is constituted of a vast ocean, across which the soul/spirit/essence is ferried to the Shining Land, also known as Tir na Nog or The Land of Ever Young, in some traditions of the Old Religion, also known as the Craft.

Most philosophies (i.e.empiricism, posthumanism, and Humanism) generally conclude or hold that there is not.

Religious beliefs won't get you anywhere - just the facts, Ma'am. And the fact is, that after your human body dies, you live eternally in either heaven or hell. Read The Book. The facts are there in black and white. Don't try to rely on human wisdom. All you need is to sincerely seek the truth, and it will set you free. This truth that I'm referring to applies to everyone on this earth, whether they're Athiest, Christian, Buddhist or whatever. We all have a Creator, and at the same time, we also need a Savior. Again, religious beliefs won't do it for you. There are millions of people who consider themselves to be very religious, but in the end they will end up in the wrong place, sad to say. We all need to develop a relationship (not religion) with God, our creator, and His Son, our savior, Jesus Christ. Seek His wisdom, then you will see quite clearly.

There are many theories trying to explain beyond death:

1) Atheists believe that there is nothing more. You cease to exist. No memories, no feelings, no concept of time.

2) Christianity has different interpretations. Some think you go to heaven, or hell. Another thinks you go to wait in some pergatory. Another interpretation believes that you don't exist until the resurrection, in which you come back to a paradise Earth.

3) Reincarnation believers think that you die, go to some heaven, then come back to Earth to live another life. You do this over and over again until your spirit is totally developed and experienced.

There are more theories. These are the ones I'm familiar with.

No one knows for certain what happens after you die, other than the physical aspects of it.

I obviously can't give you a factual answer, but it may be a good idea if you compare various types of religious beliefs concerning the afterlife for your project, especially if you are comparing less-known and/or ancient religious, not just judiasm and christianity.

You wouldn't be avoiding religion, but it could be educational so long as you present the information without bias.

What do you mean? Do you mean what happens to the physical body or the soul? A persons' soul is the most vital part of human anatomy. No scientist or man-made religion can interpret the the meaning and life cycle of the soul. Dying is an inevitable part of our life cycle, in fact, it's what competes our life cycle. No human knows what actually happens to the soul after death and no human will ever know. So don't pay attention to any man-made religion or scientific information about this subject, this is one subject that you will not fully understand until you have died yourself.

If you don't want to focus on relgious beliefs, the only thing you can focus on is what physically happens to the body - the burial, decomposition and such. That isn't really a nice topic for public speaking, so maybe you need a rethink!

well, nobody really knows. You could look into accounts from people who have had near death experiences after car crashes etc. There are reports of seeing bright lights, seeing dead relatives, travelling down a long tunnel, seeing your own body lying there etc. You may well have to take religion into account as what peple believe will happen after death can affect the way they behave when they are alive - everything from suicide bombers to people who spend their lives doing good deeds - they all do it because of what they expect to happen in the 'next life'. I don't know whether you want to look into different funeral rites and customs as well or not.

well I think the only way to answer it would be by religious beliefs. But uh, if you don't have any relgion i guess you would just disappear! Your body rots away and stuff. But the truest thing would be that you go to heaven! Really thats all I can say. Hope that helps
