A toner makes certain your face is completely clean before you apply your moisturizer. It's similar to astringent but it's less harsh.

Hi people say you should cleanse and tone but if i do i get really bad spots. Cleanser open the pores so you can and all the toner does is shut them again which is why after you have used one your face feels tight. Cleansing can also be classed as washing you face with soap but then you opbviously dont close the pores. You can do this by just rinsing the face with cold water. I would only recommend exfoliation twice a week though to get rid of the dead skin sells. Just as long as you use a good moisturier and a night cream that deosnt make you break out then you will be fine. I use oil of evening primrose soap and moisturieser. I did get the cleanser and toner but it burnt my skin as like all the other do but using the soap and cream is fine and i dont have much spots anymore

I think it depends on the type of skin you have. I'm oily in certain spots, so everyday washing is necessary for me. However, the BEST facial cleanser is...wait for it... powdered milk! No joke- the lactic acid is soothing and cleansing for the skin without stripping it. Just buy a box of powdered milk, make a loose paste in your hand with some water, and apply like you would any other expensive facial cleanser. Toner is used to tighten the skin a bit. Plain old witch hazel is awesome for that. So the next time you're reaching for the Elizabeth Arden, try hitting your local market first.

Toners are formulated differently for different skin types/needs. According to my dermatologist (and from what I've read in several beauty/fashion mags), toner is pretty much unnecessary if you are properly washing and rinsing your face with water. A lot of toners contain alcohol and it can be irritating to your skin too. Just cleanse well, mosturize with an SPF (at least 15) and exfoliate at least once per week.

you have to tone because it gets rid of any dirt/impurities that your cleanser left behind. its an important step in keeping healthier and cleaner skin.
