You either copyright or patent it. You can find info online for the US Copyright or US Patent Office. Fill out the forms as directed.

There is also what is called the "poor man's copyright". You put the material in an envelope or package, seal it with tape, carry it to the post office, pay the postage for certified mail, have it hand canceled and mail it to yourself. Keep the certified mail receipts and DON'T OPEN the envelope or package. Then if someone steals your idea, you can sue them, and the unopened sample will be proof that you were the creator of the item. On second thought, the copyright/patent office would probably be cheaper in the long run. Hope that helps.
