She should definitely see a gynecologist to figure out why. Possible causes are if she is very low weight or exercises excessively. Also, the pituitary gland in the brain is responsible for ovulation and the menstrual cycle, so irregularities could be a sign of over- or under-activity in this area. Again, her doctor can help her figure out the cause in her case.

If she is young and not pregnant, then it is very likely an indicator of some other health problem. Is your friend obese? I'm not being critical, it's just that obese women often do have irregular periods and/or periods that stop altogether.

If she seems healthy and fit, though, then I don't know... It could be an indicator of a much more serious problem... ovarian cysts, cancer, etc.

Also, if she is a young teenager who only recently started her period in the first place, then it's probably not worth worrying about. Lots of young teens have highly irregular abnormal periods for the first few years of menstruation.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I meant to add what vallygal said, which is that being underweight, ot more specifically, having body fat percentage that is too low, may also be the cause.

Your body only ovulates when it's healthy enough to sustain a pregnancy, and it relies on fat percentage as an inidcator of that. If she is severely underweight, then her body thinks she's too young or too malnourished to have a baby.

I would suggest that she go to a doctor as soon as possible. Without actually knowing the person or her history, it is impossible to even guess why her menstrual flow has stopped. It could be related to everything from stress, to disease to menopause.

PCOS, fibroids, hormonal inbalance. She really should see a GYN because w/out a period there could be what is called hyperplasia due to the inability of the sluffing off of the walls of the uterus because no period. If she doesn't want to take birth control pills they can give her Provera (progesterone) to bring on her period every other month.

same here, it sometimes takes 6 months before i have my next period... i have been diagnosed to have a polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a health problem that can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle, hormones, fertility, weight, appearance, etc...
