A variator on a moped is part of the drive system... It is a variable diameter pulley which governs the gearing ratio between the engine RPM and the number of times the wheel is turned inrelation to the amount of turns the engine (Crankshaft) does if you notice as you speed up the engine rpm keeps to roughly the same level this is because as you move off from a standing start the VARIATOR adjusts the gear ratio automatically hence no gears, If its giving trouble its located in the housing between engine & rear wheel

A variator is a very simple set of two pulleys that have a single drive belt between them. As the engine speed increases the belt will move further out of the rear drive pulley and thus increase the rotating speed of the rear wheel. It is possible to increase the performance of your scooter by upgrading the variator parts.
