1: Critical Thinking.

This is the art of listening to others (for example advertisements and political speaches) and being able to tell what is BS and what is meaningful.

To begin, one should study "Rhetorical Logic" and learn the "Rhetorical Fallacies", both to avoid making them, and to recognize when some other speaker has made them.

Usually the only place Critical Thinking is taught in highschool is on the Debate Team. But I think it really should be introduced years sooner.

2: Observation and Memory

Too often, children are taught to forget things (that their parents are embarrassed to have said out loud) and this habit of forgetting and not noticing hampers their ability to remember later on in life.

I think that from a very early age, children should be praised for remembering and taught to notice things. They should perhaps also be taught the difference between repeating something in public and discussing it in private. But that's another issue. :)

3: Looking at the Other Side of the issue

Whenever one hears something they think is totally off the wall, but the speaker appears to be serious, they should stop and ask themselves, "Under what set of assumptions does that statement make complete sense?" This will help them understand where the other oerson is coming from and reduce misunderstandings.

They may still decide that the statement is bunk, because the assumpts are wrong.

It they think some of those assumpts are incorrect, they can discuss this in the open, rather than jumping to conclusions based on their own assumptions.

If it turns out the assumpts are not incorrect, then a whole new avenue of thought has just opened up to discussiona nd learning.

Listening. Most people can talk, read and write but few know how to listen carefully and objectively. It is a gift and an art that is difficult to master. If more of us knew how to listen, instead of just hear, we would be much better off.
