Ahh, I had this problem with AIM at work. I took it out of the start up menu, but it was still logging on when I booted up. In most of these IM programs, there is a "preferences" or "settings" area where you can check/uncheck a box that says something about starting up the program when the computer boots up. Tricky, huh? Even though it's not in your startup on your computer, it's kind of like an override within the IM program itself. Seems sneaky, doesn't it?
It could also be in the All Users profile -- documents & settings - all users. I'm pretty sure it's in the program itself, though.

depends what messenger you are running. If it is yahoo messenger or windows messenger then just log into it and go to options or preferences and you will find the option to auto start with winows this needs the tick taken out.
or
You can also remove it by going to start, run and typing msconfig and on the startup tab you take the tick out of the messenger that is logging it will be something like either MSNMSGR or YMSGR

Please turn off the automatic commence when I go on-line to my workstation. i'm no longer certain the precise words yet discover the single which suits in the route of what you would opt for to do. this is going to quit it from drawing close at log in. in case you do not opt for it, you need to have it deleted. assuming you have xp
go to the start menu of windows, go to run, type in msconfig then click the start up tab, whala! you can disable anything you want, be careful not to disable your antivirus or windows programs though :) the programs that are editable are usually at the bottom, but just disable the things that annoy you :)
you will need to reboot when you are done, at the same time you can remove things that usually annoy like quicktime task and realscheduler

Go into the options of the messanger and tell it to not automatically sign you in. Also if you look where it says remember your password sometimes there is an option there that is automatically logging you in, just un check it. Hope this help, good luck :)

For Yahoo! Messenger look at Messenger's Preferences. Under "General" there's a checkbox just for that.
