To make any poster board interesting try using contrast. Say if you have a picture of Lincoln... put the picture in front of a black border. To make it even more interesting cut the border with craft scissors, the kind that have the zig zag type pattern. Also Try not to put everything on straight play with angles and color. Both will catch the persons eye. Try making titles like "Did you know?", "Who would have thought!?" and put interesting facts about the 13th amendment. Try mentioning how the slaves were freed. Try writing a paragraph from a slave perspective or look up a slave's journal. Try to really illustrate how it must have felt to hear: you are free.

Hope this helps!

I might be inclined to do a wall of bricks and each brick would have a word that is reflective of bigotry, enslavement, inequality, etc. I would have the wall being torn down by people and an opening with President Lincoln helping people of all ages through -- and many people with him greeting those coming through the wall's remains. You might be able to do this as a collage so you wouldn't need to do a lot of drawing, unless you are good at that.

Sounds like a great visual assignment -- I hope yours rocks.

You can decorate it with pictorials of Africans on slave ships, and African slaves working on plantations.

You may also look for African American leaders throughout time, since the slaves were freed.

Find the Web Sites on the Brady pictures of the Civil War, those are not ART those are actual photo documentation. If you are really creative you might want to get them on photoshop and see if you can use different shapes and cropping.
