aseptic technique is extremely important. When inserting an I.V. into a hospital patient, you do not want to contaminate the patient with airborne contaminants as well as bacteria, yeast, virus, etc. If aseptic technique is not instituted, the patient is at risk for Sepis(blood poisioning). If bacteria makes its way into the bloodstream, they multiply in the millions and billions to the point where they overtake the body and the patient dies of Sepis. Therefore, handwashing, proper clothing, masks, gloves, shoe covering, and the use of a horizontal laminar flow hood is required. In preparing chemo drugs, you would use a vertical laminar flow hood.

One of the biggest problems facing hospital facilities today is nosocomial infections, or hospital aquired infections. Asceptic technique is imerative in the prevention of spreading nosocomial infection. Something as simple as proper handwashing technique to following proper isolation protocals would reduce the number of these infections, but hospital aquired infections cost millions of dollars and thousands of lives in the United States yearly. Improper sterilization techniques have also cause outbreaks of virulent outbreaks of MRSA and Psuedomonas--don't even get me started on VRE or clostridium dificiles. The MRSA problem has gptten so out of hand it is now in the community.
