To put a basement under an existing house is an expensive proposition. Even a small basement in an area of the country where building costs are cheapest might easily start in the $20,000 range. If that is over your budget, there is no need to go further at this time. If it is a possibility, you need to solicit estimates from reputable contractors in your area. Keep in mind that most contractors will offer free estimates. In the end, if you choose to have the work done, check the contractors references carefully, make sure everything is spelled out in detail in the contract, and make sure the contractor carries liability and worker's compensation insurance.
Good luck with your basement project.

The construction part will be a lot easier if you move the home first. Digging under the house would almost surely have to be done by hand, UNLESS the house can be propped up and a machine (combination backhoe and bucket) can come in from one side, preferably the side parallel to the floor joists.
I did this on a regular house with a crawl space, and that's what the method I used. The house was extremely solid (2x10 floorboards!), and it was quickly done. You'd need an experienced contractor to do the support part of the work, to avoid wall cracks and window breakage.

the house will have to be shored up. and a reputable excavating firm should be able to do this before they dig it out. form footers , pour footers. add gravel to top of footer on the inside. run french drain on the outside and top off with gravel. lay blocks , pour floor . easy right? call a masonry contractor. he'll be in and out of there in 2 weeks. youll be there all summer... est. cost 12,000-15,000 u.s.

Call a general contractor. They will be able to give you an idea of what you're looking at in your area. Sounds like a big job, good luck.
