The tear drop is usually performed by undersized players (mainly point guards). A player usually starts the layup procedure from a distance further away from the basket. The ball is generally released earlier and in a higher arch then the normal layup. The ball is usually away before the taller defender has the chance to block it. It is so named because the ball drops down from the high point of the arch like a falling tear drop. Gary Payton of the Miami Heat and John Stockton of the Utah Jazz during their primes in the early-to-mid 90s were considered to have the best tear drops in the game. Also known as a runner.

A "teardrop" is a high-arcing basketball shot released well before a defender can reach a driving opponent. John Stockton of the Utah Jazz and Gary Payton of the Miami Heat were examples of players who had the best "teardrops".

A "teardrop" is any player who penetrates the lane and shoots a one handed floater high in the air over a defender. You may also hear it called a runner.
